5 Habits That Keep a NOC Running Smoothly

5 Habits That Keep a NOC Running Smoothly
Working across monitoring dashboards, MikroTik routers, and client tickets every day taught me that most outages are prevented long before they happen. Here are five habits I rely on:

1. Baseline everything. Know what "normal" bandwidth, latency, and CPU load look like for each device before something breaks - otherwise every graph looks alarming.

2. Tag tickets by root cause, not symptom. It makes monthly reports actually useful instead of just a list of complaints.

3. Automate the boring checks. A five-line Python or Apps Script routine that pings critical endpoints every few minutes catches issues faster than any human watching a dashboard.

4. Document the weird fixes immediately. The workaround you figured out at 2 AM will not be memorable at 2 PM the next day.

5. Talk to the upstream provider before you need to. A relationship built during calm periods makes emergency calls much shorter.

None of this is complicated - it is just consistency, applied daily.
